Who We Are

We're Sunk Robotics, a student-run robotics team based in Medford, Massachusetts. Our team is passionate about underwater engineering, hands-on design, and pushing the limits of robotics. Collaboration and innovation drive everything we do.

What We Do

From building Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to developing and testing new robotic solutions, we design and fabricate technology for real-world challenges. Each project meets new criteria and overcomes different challenges.

Our History

Since our founding in November of 2020, Sunk Robotics has developed multiple underwater engineering solutions. Our current lineup includes STEVE ROV, JENA float, JONA ROV, and we are currently developing our latest ROV 2026 (BOB ROV).

Sunk Robotics' Float v1

BOB ROV

BOB ROV is the latest ROV prototype designed to complete deep-sea educational and experimental missions at depths up to 500 meters. With a completely redesigned frame, a next-generation PCB-based electronics system, and improved maneuverability, BOB ROV is built to excel in challenging underwater environments.

JONA ROV

Meet JONA, Sunk Robotics' newest ROV. Created for the 2024 MATE ROV, and modified for the 2025 competition, JONA ROV brings a whole new frame, a PCB- based electronics system, and overall improved manuverability.

JENA Float

A vertically profiling robot designed to autonomously collect data from various depths in the ocean. Being revision two, this design includes a completely overhauled electronics system and a much more modern and controllable User Interface (UI).

Steve ROV

STEVE ROV

Version one of Sunk Robotics' competing robots. This design includes dual feed cameras along with a lightweight tether reducing drag. With 6 thrusters, it is capable of moving in 4 degrees of freedom.

Our Journey

2025 – Growth

The team has decided to part ways from MATE ROV and focus on our latest ROV 2026 (BOB ROV) designed to complete deep-sea educational and experimental missions.

2024 – World Champions

In 2024, Sunk Robotics placed 9th in the International ROV Competition and won the NE MATE ROV Regional.

2023 - Mate ROV Competition

Participated in the Mate ROV Competition and got 1st place in regionals. Went to Longmont, Colorado for the world competition and placed 14th in the world.

2022 – MATE ROV Debut

In 2022, Sunk Robotics participated in the New England MATE ROV Regional Competition for the first time, placing first, and landing a spot in the international competition. Went to Long Beach California for the world competition and placed 23rd in the world

2022 – First ROV

Built and tested our first Remote Operated Vehicle (STEVE ROV) for competition use in the 2022 MATE ROV Competition to represent our school.

2020 – The Beginning

Sunk Robotics was founded by a group of passionate engineering students that were part of the MVTHS Engineering & Robotics shop in Medford High School.
